Strong winds down trees, damage planes in NJ

SCOTCH PLAINS

The trees brought down power lines on Cooper Road just after 4 a.m. The lines caught fire, apparently fueled by gas, shooting up a ball of fire.

Cooper Road was closed between Terrill Road and Martine Avenue.

More than a dozen trees were downed in Scotch Plains by the fast-moving storm.

At least 5,000 customers were without power in the northern and central part of the state. Another 16,000 customers were in the dark in South Jersey, mainly in Camden, Burlington and Atlantic counties.

Several small planes at Trenton Mercer Airport in Ewing flipped over during a 55 mph wind gust. A section of roof of one of airport's hangers also blew off.
