The sprinkler supply line cracked in the center median on West Street just after 2 a.m. Wednesday.
Water flowed into the northbound lanes, near Watts Street.
The water was quickly shut off, but the break caused severe icing.
The northbound lanes of West Street were closed between Vestry and Canal streets for the cleanup.
One building, at 288 West Street, was left temporarily without water.
