Quiet car service expands on Metro-North, LIRR

NEW YORK

Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road, two of the biggest commuter rail lines, have added more quiet cars.

The feedback about the quiet cars was so positive that MTA officials decided to expand the program.

Metro-North riders will have quiet cars on all AM and PM peak trains on the North Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines.

The LIRR is introducing quiet car service for the first time, to all peak trains on the Far Rockaway branch and select rush-hour trains on the Hempstead, Long Beach and West Hempstead branches.

The quiet cars are self-enforced, but officials ask that riders do not use cell phones, disable the sound on all electronics and keep conversations to a low level.

At the onset of the program, conductors will hand out specially-designed "Shhhhhh cards" to make sure riders are aware of proper etiquette, in both English and Spanish.
