The packed school bus was on its way to Surprise Lake Middle School in Washington state when seventh grader Jeremy Wuitschick saw the driver let go of the wheel and slump over. The youngster got up and grabbed the wheel.
The bus security camera shows Jeremy and another student helping with the wheel and turning off the ignition after the bus came to a stop.
"I just went up grabbed the wheel, took the keys out of the ignition and the bus stopped," Jeremy said. "It was pretty scary."
The director of student programs in the Fife School District was driving behind the bus when he noticed the bus veer toward the side of the road. The students had already called 911 and the director started CPR until the police and medics arrived. The bus driver was taken to the hospital. His condition was not known.
Jeremy says he knew he probably couldn't hit the brake because the driver was so big.
The quick reactions by the kids probably saved their fellow students from injury or worse.
