Arrest made in stray-bullet shooting of Bronx girl

NEW YORK

Authorities say 18-year-old Angel Morales was taken into custody Sunday night and charged with attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Morales allegedly opened fire outside an apartment building on Hughes Avenue in the Tremont section around 1 a.m. Sunday.

A bullet struck young Hailey Dominguez as she came home from a baby shower with her mother and 8-year-old brother. The bullet cut through her stomach and into her lung.

Hailey's stepfather Jose Rosario said the family ran into the building before realizing the girl had been seriously wounded.

Doctors say Hailey's condition is stable, but she is in a medically-induced coma in the intensive care unit at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in Washington Heights.

Police say Hailey was not the intended target of the shooting, and believe Morales was targeting a man with whom he had previously had an altercation.
