The violence broke out at about 2 a.m. on New Year's Day. Police say the first shootings of the new year were a 32-year-old man was shot in the stomach at a Bronx building lobby. A 19-year-old was struck in the back in Brooklyn in a separate incident. Both were stable.
Most of the other people shot were men, all in separate incidents where one person was struck and wounded. A woman was struck in the arm at a Bronx public housing development.
The incidents come after 2012, when violent crime was down to record lows in New York City, according to city officials.
