Smithtown bowling alley roof collapses due to snow

SMITHTOWN

Smithtown Fire Chief John Hansen said a large section of the roof collapsed under the weight of the snow at around 4:30 p.m.

The building was built in the 1960s and has a bow string truss roof. Three sections, or about 100 feet of roof collapsed.

The bowling alley was closed because of the storm, so nobody was inside or injured.

The collapse broke several sprinkler pipes, which caused water to flow onto the nearby LIRR train tracks. Trains are not running on this section of the Port Jefferson branch because of the storm, so service was not affected.

There was also a gas leak caused by the collapse, but National Grid has since shut the gas off.

Electricity has been cut to the building as well.

AMF Smithtown Lanes is located at 200 Landing Ave in Smithtown.
