Off-duty officer killed in Queens after crashing into storefront

NEW YORK

The accident happened just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Queens Plaza South and Crescent Street in Long Island City.

Police say the 36-year old victim was traveling eastbound on the exit ramp of the Ed Koch Bridge when she struck a guardrail, then ran into a cement barrier.

Upon impact, the car flipped onto its passenger side and struck a vacant storefront.

The officer, a 10-year veteran, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was assigned to the 17th precinct on the East Side of Manhattan and was apparently driving home from work. No one else was injured in the crash.

It was the fourth serious vehicle crash in the area since 2011.
