The shooting happened at 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of East Lincoln and Sheridan Avenues.
Police say one person was taken into custody, but have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting.
The victim was a 26-year old man from the Bronx. A weapon was recovered at the scene.
There wre initial reports that the victim was a teenager, prompting the Mount Vernon school district to issue a statement saying it did not know whether he was a Mount Vernon high school student.
But the report was unfounded.
