Verrazano Bridge crash snarls traffic for morning commute

STATEN ISLAND

Traffic is flowing again Tuesday afternoon, but the nightmare incident backed up traffic for miles.

A tractor-trailer and car collided on the Staten Island-bound upper level shortly before 7 a.m. and burst into flames, scorching both vehicles.

Firefighters were on the scene putting out hotspots following the fire.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The Brooklyn-bound lanes reopened shortly before 8 a.m. but the Staten Island-bound lanes remained closed for awhile longer.

The bridge's lower level remained open.
