Police search for 30-year-old nurse last seen leaving Bellevue Hospital on Dec. 8

BEDFORD PARK, Bronx (WABC) -- Police are searching for a 30-year-old nurse from the Bronx who hasn't been seen since leaving the hospital where she works back on December 8.

That was when Mahfuza Rahman, of Bedford Park, left Bellevue Hospital just after 4:30 p.m. that day, but she never returned or notified her employer.

Her husband reportedly told co-workers that she had to go back to Bangladesh to care for her parents, who were injured in an accident, and that she would be back by last week.

She still has not returned as police opened a missing persons case, put out a poster and started combing through the family home on East 198th Street. They even dug up a patch of concrete in the front of the house.

On Wednesday, police reported that the missing woman's husband is in Bangladesh. He traveled there on Dec. 14th with his daughter. Investigators have not been able to contact him.

Investigators have talked to the Rahman's parents in Bangladesh; her family's last contact with her was Dec. 8.

A neighbor told Eyewitness News that no one has been living there since December. "The lady disappear three months ago," neighbor Jose Garcia said. "And he told me, watch my house because I have to go to my country, Bangladesh. But I never see him after this."

Police have been in and out of the house over the past several days, with detectives carrying what appeared to be a bag filled with mail as they continue to sift for clues in Rahman's disappearnce.

Neighbors who didn't know Rahman and her husband well did say they had not seen them since December. "They've been out since December from what I know," neighbor Pedro Guzman said. "It's been closed for two or three months."

Others are hoping Rahman will be found safe.

"He seems to be a good guy, like a quiet person," neighbor Edwin Lugo said. "And her too."
