Residents upset over sex shop near library
Tim Fleischer reports on the battle over a new novelty store in Brooklyn.

FLATLANDS (WABC) -- A battle is brewing in Brooklyn over a new adult novelty store.

The Sexy Wonders Adult Boutique opened in the Flatlands section just a few days ago, a stone's throw away from the Brooklyn Public Library.

Now, the community is worried about what children in the neighborhood will be exposed to.

"That's not right," one neighbor said. "That shouldn't happen, not in a nice neighborhood like this."

City Council members Jumaane Williams and Alan Maisel released the following joint statement:

"While the establishment is within their legal right to conduct business, it is our hope that the owner is sensitive to the children and families that will pass by their windows every day."

The reaction comes quick when you ask neighbors about the placement of shop. Mothers with children walk pass the racy windows adorned with thinks like pleasure tape, love masks and sexy lingerie.

"It might be the type of themes that people don't want their children to talk about or they are not ready to introduce, so we don't think it's really neighborly," Williams said. "We also want to talk to the owner and see if they will work with us, at least at the beginning, to try and cover up some of the things they are selling that we think are questionable, and then the community has to decide what they want to do on an economic level."

Many children use the library after school. Resident Steven Ramos, a parent himself, is not pleased.

"Right next to a library, that's not a good look," he said. "I was discussing it with my wife. We have a 3-year-old, and for that to be right there, no. I think they need to get rid of that."

The store manager tells Eyewitness News that the owner is currently in Florida but is planning to come back and meet with the council members about their concerns.
