PORT RICHMOND (WABC) -- A deer is the culprit after a break-in at a store on Staten Island.
The deer smashed through the front window of a TJ Maxx in Port Richmond overnight. It was running around inside when a worker arrived to open the store on Saturday morning.
The deer was severely injured, and had to be put down.
Leaders on Staten Island have been complaining about the growing deer population. They have urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to come up with a deer-management plan.
A 2014 aerial survey found 763 deer on Staten Island.
