Police: Man evicted from Philadelphia homeless shelter shoots 2, 1 dead

NORTH PHILADELPHIA -- Police say a man who was evicted from a North Philadelphia homeless shelter returned Sunday morning with a gun, killing one employee and injuring another.

The incident occurred around 6 a.m. Sunday inside the Station House Transitional Shelter on the 2600 block of North Broad Street.

Police tell Action News both victims are employees at the shelter.

Police say the suspected shooter was evicted from the shelter two nights ago when he was intoxicated.

He returned Sunday morning to get his belongings when an argument began between the suspect and employee.

At that point, police say he pulled out a gun and shot two employees and fled.

One employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second victim was taken to Temple University Hospital and is expected to survive.

The search continues for the known gunman.

According to its website, the Station House Transitional Shelter is "affordable supportive housing designed to provide housing and appropriate support services to persons who are homeless or who are close to homelessness. The transition is to help them be more self sufficient to move towards independent living on their own. Transitional housing locations are oftentimes called Halfway Houses."

The shelter is run by former Philadelphia mayor Wilson Goode.
