NEW YORK (WABC) -- For the 39th year, the Empire State Building RunUp - the world's oldest and most famous tower race - challenged runners from around the globe to race up its famed 86 flights which is a total of 1,576 stairs. During the race, the fastest runners covered the 86 floors in about 10 minutes.
By the way, if you're just visiting the Empire State Building Observatory you can get there via elevator in under a minute.
Leaders in the sport of professional tower-running converge at ESB to take part in the Men's and Women's elite heat, challenging both body and mind in what some consider the ultimate test of endurance. This year's winner was 41-year-old Australian Darren Wilson, who led the pack and finished in 10 minutes, 36 seconds.
Eyewitness News Team Members Amy Freeze and Rob Powers made it to the top!
Additional participants include media, celebrities, and New York City real estate brokers. Marmot, Challenged Athletes Foundation and Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation also bring climbers from their organizations. The MMRF raised $100,000 between their 20 racers which included Nick Hexum, Lead Singer of the band "311" whose mother has multiple myeloma. Marmot sponsors the race.
