CLIFTON, N.J. (WABC) -- A four-alarm fire destroyed one Clifton home and spread to a second, leaving residents of both homeless.
The fire started at 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Residents fled the two homes. It's unclear how many people were displaced by the fire.
Smoke and flames could be seen through the eaves of one of the houses. The back side of one of the homes on East Sixth Street had collapsed. The houses in the neighborhood are very close together. Neighbors said they tried to use a garden hose to extinguish the blaze, but it had no effect.
Four firefighters were treated for non life-threatening injuries. One was treated for fatigue, one for a fall, one for a facial cut and difficulty breathing. No residents were injured.
Clifton Fire Chief Vincent Colavitti Jr. said the fire broke out at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday in a two-family home and quickly spread to an adjacent house.
The original fire building was destroyed and will be demolished.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
