MOUNT OLIVE (WABC) -- A man is charged with arson after his mother was rescued from a burning house in New Jersey.

23-year old John Maulbeck is facing charges in the Mount Olive fire Tuesday night.

Two off-duty state troopers were hailed as heroes after they rushed into the home and rescued Maulback's mother Josephine.

Troopers Adam Gonzalez and Justin Storie had just completed their shift at the Troop B Netcong Station when they noticed dark smoke billowing from a home on U.S. Highway 206 at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Without hesitation, they immediately stopped to render aid. They gained access into the residence through the front door, where they encountered heavy, black smoke.

Josephine Maulback, 51, heard the troopers inside and began calling for help.

Working as a team, they were able to locate the victim and navigate their way through the near blackout conditions before the house became fully engulfed.

Both troopers were treated at Morristown Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation and minor cuts and abrasions.

Josephine Maulback was taken to Hackensack Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
