NEW YORK (WABC) -- Food trucks and ice cream trucks have long been on the move. But they're expanding and now we have New York City's first florist on wheels.
And just like an ice cream truck, this truck prompts lots of smiles, with fresh flowers served curbside. Only in New York.
Ashley Custer and Kristin Heckler were stocking up at the flower district, not for their flower shop, but for their flower truck, which hit the city's streets in April.
Inside, a sink and cooler, where Ashley creates grab and go bouquets. And just like a food truck, when the window opens they're open for business.
"We have three sizes, studio, loft and penthouse," they say, a nod to New York City living, which was part of how Ashley got the idea.
"Working in shops in the city, they're all so tiny anyway," she said. "I just got used to working in a small space, and just seeing food trucks every day and watching that model sort of do well was really interesting to me."
And so the flower truck idea started to bloom. "It was one of those ideas that at first I was like, maybe that's ridiculous because nobody's thought of it, and then I was like, maybe that might be completely brilliant," said Kristin.
Uprooted was two years in the making, and the goal? To uproot the status quo.
"There are a lot of upscale florists and I wanted to kind of provide the middle ground," said Ashley.
And a truck costs less than a retail shop, and it certainly turns heads. "It's really nice when people sort of stop in their tracks and slow down and just look at the flowers," she said.
And it's even nicer when they buy.
"When we have a customer that comes up and is just so tickled, tons of questions, can I take a photo, I think this is the most wonderful idea, you're totally going to make it here, and that's the best feeling," said Kristin.
And the bouquets sell for $15 to $40. @Uprooted NYC also does events and weddings.
