UPPER EAST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Family, friends and brothers in blue gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral Tuesday morning as former NYPD First Deputy Commissioner John Timoney was laid to rest.

NYPD Commissioner William Bratton delivered the eulogy at funeral services for Timoney, who died last week at 68 after battling lung cancer.

Timoney began his career as a beat cop in the Bronx in 1969 and worked his way up the NYPD ranks. He became first deputy commissioner in 1994, during Bratton's first tenure as police commissioner.

After a long NYPD career, Timoney served as police commissioner in Philadelphia and chief in Miami, where a separate service was held last week.

Burial followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
