Man busy making, decorating gingerbread houses by the hundreds
Lauren Glassberg has the story.

CORONA (WABC) -- What uses 720 pounds of candy, and 25 pounds of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger?

A lot of gingerbread houses!

They're all on display now to get you in the holiday spirit.

Jon Lovitch is an executive chef who isn't cooking a whole lot these days in his Bronx apartment.

That's because he's too busy making and decorating gingerbread houses by the hundreds.

"Close to 5,000 pounds of icing and dough go into this little mixer right here," Lovitch said.

It something he started two decades ago.

"There's a part of me that's like enough is enough, and another part is like how do you stop when people love what you do," Lovitch said.

And he kind of loves it too; after all he spends most of the year making them, but rarely nibbles on the goods.

"It almost feels like cannibalism," Lovitch said.

And then they go on display, this year and last they have taken up residence at the New York Hall of Science.

They are giving visitors something to feast their eyes on.

Last year there were 138 houses there, earning Jon the Guinness Record for World's Largest Gingerbread Village.

But if that was a village, this year it's a city. Monday's count coming in at 955.

"That is super impressive. It's incredible the amount of work and the beautiful design of the candies is just priceless," one museum goer said.

Come January 11th, they'll be given away, first come first serve, allowing people a little bit of the sweet life.

"All I see are imperfections, I see white icing showing here, and tiles missing there, but nobody really sees that but me for the most part, so I just take a great deal of price when I look at it and I think I did this," Lovitch said.

Jon says that he already plans to do this again next year and will start backing again on January 15, 2015.
