Livery driver stabbed in Yonkers; suspect takes off in taxi

YONKERS (WABC) -- Authorities are searching for a suspect who stabbed a livery driver in Yonkers, and then took off in his cab.

All he did was his job, but it landed him in intensive care. Livery cab driver Christian Rosa Amparo, 36, is hooked up to machines to keep him alive.

"Christian's in very, very, very, serious condition," said Fernando Mateo, Federation of Taxi Drivers.

Thursday night, his fellow cab drivers in Yonkers took a break from work to ask the public for help in finding the man who left their friend fighting for life.

Police say he'd picked up a fare Wednesday evening, and in a parking lot off North Broadway, that passenger with no warning stabbed him in the neck.

Amparo, with an artery severed, managed to run across the street to St. John's Hospital, while his assailant drove off in his cab.

"Every time that back door opens you're picking up a stranger and you don't know what that stranger is going to do to you," Mateo said.

Police found the cab, abandoned, on Saw Mill River Road not long after the attack.

By then, Amparo was on his way to the trauma unit at Westchester Medical Center. He's married and a father of six. Berto Aquino is his cousin.

"We went to the hospital. We want to say he's pulling through; he's still in intensive care. Just pray for the best," Aquino said.
