PROSPECT PARK (WABC) -- The body of a 2-year-old girl was pulled from a pond in Brooklyn Saturday evening, nearly five hours after she was reported missing.

Ruhshona Kurbnova had apparently followed her brother into the murky water near the Boathouse in Prospect Park.

Her brother was pulled out alive, but she apparently went under and drowned. When police originally asked the boy where his sister was, he pointed to the pond.

Ruhshona's mother was so traumatized she was taken away from the scene on a stretcher. Family members were agonizing while police were involved in an exhaustive, frantic search.

Many people in the park ran to the family's aid as word spread that a child was missing. Police also used a helicopter in their search to lower an officer close to the surface of the water to see where the two-year-old went under.

The mother was cooking inside the park working on a barbeque at the time. Eyewitnesses say she had just taken her eyes off the kids to check on the food when she walked away.

Officers combed the 585-acre park while divers searched the murky lake.

The 78th precinct posted and tweeted missing person posters with a picture of the 2-foot tall Ruhshona.
