BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Three young boys are under arrest, accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in a middle school basement in Brooklyn.

The incident happened October 7 at Mott Hall IV Middle School on Herkimer Street in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section.

The NYPD said the principal notified police, saying three male students at the school pulled down the girl's pants and sexually assaulted her.

The boys, ages 14, 12 and 12, were arrested and charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment.

The 12-year-old girl is a student at Ocean Hill Collegiate Charter School, which is located on the same campus.

"The NYPD was notified of an alarming incident that was reported at a school in Brooklyn," the Department of Education said in a statement. "We are working closely with the NYPD as they conduct an investigation, and are providing the school and families with ongoing supports. Nothing is more important than the safety of all students and staff."
