Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka recently finished remodeling their late-19th-century townhouse in New York. The couple invited Architectural Digest into their home for its March issue.

Although the couple met in New York, they had been living in California for more than a decade while Harris was on the hit TV show "How I Met Your Mother." But once the show ended in 2013, they turned their sights to New York.

"But the plan was always to come back to New York when the show ended and raise our family," Harris told Architectural Digest.

Harris and Burtka had an apartment in Harlem, and after looking all over the city, ended up staying in the neighborhood.

Built in 1904, it was originally a speak-easy for Irish mill workers, according to Burtka.

Remodeling while raising 4-year-old twins was a challenge, the couple told Architectural Digest.

"Kids need naps," Harris said. "And renovations need noise."

The five-story home includes space for Harris's production-company offices and a screening room. Avid art collectors, the home is designed to feature the couple's eclectic collection. Burtka is also a trained chef, so the kitchen features a large island where the family can gather while he cooks. Watch the video above to learn about the home's more magical features.

Architectural Digest also asked Harris about his upcoming gig hosting the Oscars. He says he's excited, but the entire process has him feeling a little like Indiana Jones. Check out the video below to see what he means.
