MANTOLOKING, N.J. -- A man who drowned over the weekend while swimming at the Jersey shore was the stepson of a New York schools superintendent.
Authorities say John Crimmins was with friends in the ocean off of Mantoloking when he suddenly disappeared from their sight around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
An extensive search was launched and Crimmins was found in the surf less than an hour later. Rescuers performed CPR. The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.
Crimmins' stepfather, Yonkers Schools Superintendent Michael Yazurlo, issued a statement to the Journal News confirming his death.
"Our hearts are heavy, we will miss John," Yazurlo said.
Crimmins is also survived by his mother, Nancy, and a sister.
Authorities have not released further details on the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.
