WESTERLEIGH, Staten Island (WABC) -- The FDNY is mourning one of their own after a lieutenant died on the job.
Joe Maiello, of Ladder Company 83 on Staten Island, passed away Sunday morning while in his quarters.
He was previously stationed out of Ladder 148 in Brooklyn.
"Much was asked of Joseph Maiello in his outstanding career as a New York City Firefighter. As a young member of the Department on September 11th, he responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center and for years to come, he courageously fought fires and protected residents in Brooklyn. As a veteran member 20 years later, he was promoted to Lieutenant and led his fellow Firefighters to fires and emergencies throughout the COVID-19 pandemic," said Commissioner Daniel Nigro. "The entire Department mourns the loss of this brave Lieutenant who dedicated his life to serving and saving others."
Lt Maiello is the 1,155th member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife, Irene, and their two children, ages 16 and 14. Maiello's funeral arrangements are pending.
