HAUPPAUGE (WABC) -- A Long Island man is charged with driving while under the influence of drugs in a crash that fractured a young girl's skull.
Police say 21-year-old Brandon Cumberbatch's 2002 Chevy Impala hit a minivan carrying 40-year-old Arunima Singh, her 18-year-old son Avaneesh and her 7-year-old daughter Bhaswi on Route 111 in Hauppauge around 7:15 p.m. Monday.
Cumberbatch's vehicle then veered onto the shoulder, over the curb and into the parking lot of the Hauppauge Plaza and struck an unoccupied parked vehicle.
In addition to the skull fracture, the girl suffered facial injuries.
She is listed in serious condition at the hospital.
Her mother, brother and Cumberbatch all suffered minor injuries.
Cumberbatch, of Ridge is charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.
The vehicles were impounded for a safety check, and the investigation is continuing. Vehicular Crime Unit detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident to call them at 631-852-6555.
