NEW YORK (WABC) -- A veteran NYPD detective was arrested for driving while intoxicated while off duty.

According to the criminal complaint, 53 year old James Nash crashed his Cadillac Escalade at West 4th Street and Avenue P in Gravesend, Brooklyn, at 5:45 Wednesday evening.

There were no injuries.

Police say Nash refused to take a breathalyzer test and was charged with driving while intoxicated and for refusing to take a breathalyzer test.

Nash is assigned to the Brooklyn South Homicide Squad and has been with the department for more than 20 years.

He was suspended 30 days without pay, which is standard when an officer is arrested.

The officer exhibited "slurred speech, watery eyes, and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on the defendants breath."

The arrest is the latest in several recent incidents involving off-duty police officers and alcohol.
