MOTT HAVEN, Bronx (WABC) -- Police are searching for more people involved in a Bronx street fight that resulted in the shooting of an NYPD officer.

Officer Sherrod Stuart, marking his fourth anniversary on the job, was shot early Saturday morning in the South Bronx while exchanging gunfire with a suspect who was fighting with several other people with knives and bats in the street.

Stuart, 25, was shot in the right foot, officials said. He is being treated at Lincoln Hospital and is listed in stable condition; he is expected to recover and could be released Sunday. Stuart is a member of an anti-crime unit at the nearby 40th Precinct.

The suspect identified as Christopher Rice, 19, was also wounded and he was listed in serious condition at Lincoln. Police Commissioner William Bratton said Rice has a criminal history with five previous arrests, including a fare beating charge Friday morning. He was released at 11 p.m. Friday.

Bratton said the incident started around 2 a.m. when a fight broke out at a party with 100-200 people and spilled into street. Bratton described it as a "jump-up" party -- not held at a licensed location, but at a loft space over a Chase bank.

Police received several 911 calls reporting the fight involving guns, bats and knives at 2505 Third Ave. Officers pursued a suspect, Bratton said, when they arrived at the scene, then exchanged gunfire during which Stuart was struck in the right foot. Stuart fired back, striking the suspect four times. A .380 semi-automatic firearm was recovered at the scene.
