Stuff your stomachs, not your disposal this Thanksgiving
Potatoes and turkey legs will be on your Thanksgiving plate, but when the meal is over, what happens next could cost you a lot of money

HOUSTON -- Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and while cooking the turkey and setting the table are probably top on your list, calling the plumber is near the bottom. But if you are not careful because it's a call you may be forced to make if you make this $250 mistake.

Potatoes, carrots and turkey legs: All are going to be on your Thanksgiving plate, but when the meal is over, what happens next could cost you a lot of money.

Susan Biscardi plans to serve a huge meal this Thanksgiving. But when the meal is over, she may be tempted to make an expensive mistake by cramming all that over junk into the disposal.

"I am afraid of breaking my disposal," she said.

Unfortunately, so many people over-tax the disposal that plumbers consider Thanksgiving one of the busiest times of the year.

"Thanksgiving for plumbers is always quite busy, it is almost the Super Bowl for plumbers," said Joshua Rowland with John Moore services.

Moore says some homeowners get lucky and the repair is less than $50, but that's not always the case.

"It can get definitely range in the hundreds of dollars, it can get quite expensive," Rowland said.

A common problem is potato peels.

"One potato, OK, you start peeling the whole thing for 13 people and you start stuffing it in there, it is not going to make it all the way through, it is going to clog up," Rowland said.

So instead of the disposal, dump bones and grease in the trash so you can concentrate on football instead of calling the repairman.
