Latino lawmakers arrested at Trump Tower protest

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) -- Ten people were arrested during a protest led by Latino lawmakers outside Trump Tower in Midtown.

They were calling attention to the Trump administrations immigration policies, pushing the president and Congress to act quickly to pass a new DREAM Act to give young immigrants a path to citizenship.

Several people were arrested when protesters sat blocking in the intersection of 5th Avenue and 57th Street.

Latino lawmakers were among those arrested at Trump protest

Three Democratic members of Congress (U.S. Reps Raul Grijalva, of Arizona; Luis Gutierrez, of Illinois; and Adriano Espaillat, of New York) were among a small group of demonstrators who refused to move and got arrested.

The Democratic speaker of New York's City Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito, also was handcuffed and led away.

Protest organizers had said prior to the event that the lawmakers planned to get arrested.

The protest happened shortly after President Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly.
