UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) -- A home health aide was killed and another woman was critically injured in a fire on the Upper West Side early Thursday morning.

The fire broke out around 3:13 a.m. in an apartment on the 14th floor of the high-rise on 73rd Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues.

A 41-year-old woman who is believed to have worked in the apartment as a home health aide died at Mount Sinai West Hospital.

A 77-year-old woman was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Cornell Burn Unit in critical condition.

They were both found in the bathroom, possibly sheltering from the flames.

They both had suffered burns and smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to be electrical, it may have started with a kitchen appliance, but the cause remains under investigation.

Twenty units including 78 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene. The fire was placed under control just after 4 a.m.

"My husband walks our dog at 4:30 in the morning, and he came down to the chaos. There were 20 fire trucks and emergency vehicles, he told me. And I didn't hear a thing," said resident Lori Gray.

No other residents were injured or displaced.
