2 men killed when car plunges into Raritan River in New Brunswick

NEW BRUNSWICK (WABC) -- Two young men were killed when their car went out of control and plunged into the Raritan River in New Jersey early Monday.

Police say 22-year-old Robert Veras-Toribio of North Brunswick was driving a 2009 Honda Accord north on Route 18 in New Brunswick when he lost control of his car, which struck a guardrail and was partially submerged in the river before the George Street exit around 1 a.m.

Veras-Toribio, from North Brunswick, was found unresponsive and unconscious just outside the vehicle, according to police. He was located by friends and officers, who arrived on scene and began to administer CPR.

Medic units arrived and shortly after he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger, Kelvin Lantigua, 21-year-old male from New Brunswick, was located in the vehicle. He was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident.

The section of Route 18 north was closed for about four hours.
