Girl rescued after falling into sewer, breaking ankle in Buffalo

BUFFALO, New York (WABC) -- An incredible rescue was caught on camera after a man heard a young girl's cries for help from an open sewer in upstate New York.

George Bankowski was walking past the open manhole an hour after 12- year old Grace Knox had fallen in.

She shattered her ankle and was left standing in two feet of freezing water.

The grandfather knew he had to help.

George called 9-1-1 and was there as Grace was rescued but didn't get to meet the young girl until she was recovering in the hospital.

Grace's stepfather calls George his angel.
