Envelopes with suspicious white powder mailed to homes in Roselle Park

ROSELLE PARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- Police in New Jersey are investigating after more than a dozen envelopes with white powder were sent to homes on the same street in Roselle Park.

The U.S. Postal Service said the powder was tested and came back to be a benign household substance, and no one who opened them presented any symptoms.

Still, an investigation into the origin of the mailing is underway, and Roselle Park Police are warn all residents to carefully inspect any mail received.

Authorities say the envelopes had a fraudulent return address of "Roselle Park Police," and anyone who receives such a mailing should not handle the envelope and immediately contact police.

According to police, there were 16 envelopes involved, 14 of which were actually delivered to addresses in the 100 block of Warren Avenue. The other two are still at the post office because the addresses don't exist.

All 16 came through Elizabeth Post Office.

Each envelope, addressed to "resident" in typeface, contained small amount of powder that is said to be a mix of bleach and other elements that, again, are harmless.

Police would not confirm or deny if there was a note in each envelope, and there has been no description of what the possible notes said.
