If you are looking to buy your teenager their first car, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety just released its list of safest used vehicles for teens.

It comes as 83 percent of parents said they chose used over new when it comes to their child's first car.

Officials created two tiers of recommended vehicles, best choices and good choices.

Prices range from $3,000 to $20,000 and include several different makes and models.

According to the IIHS, the recommendations are guided by four main principles: young drivers should stay away from high horsepower; bigger, heavier vehicles are safer; electronic stability control (ESC) is a must; and vehicles should have the best safety ratings possible.
