Mother of NYPD officer injured in friendly fire shares details of his condition

NEW YORK (WABC) -- For the first time, we're hearing from the mother of the NYPD officer who was shot by friendly fire.

He was shot in the ankle by another officer while trying to break up a fight in the Bronx.

The officer is recovering at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

He's had one surgery and expected to have another.

"I thank God that my son is alive and well and doing well," said Donna Stuart, the officer's mother.

A mother's prayers answered. For Stuart knowing her son, NYPD Officer Sherrod Stuart, will fully recover after being shot while responding to a large fight is a true blessing.

"He's young. He's 25. He'll bounce back. It will take some time. He'll get therapy. But he's young and in good health," Stuart said.

Officer Stuart and others from the 40th Precinct were called last Saturday to what's been described as a chaotic scene in the South Bronx in which five people had been stabbed.

"It was a chaotic scene, it was yes," Stuart said.

Numerous weapons including guns and knives were found there.

While pursuing a suspect, Officer Stuart was shot in the foot. A suspect was also shot and wounded.

It was later discovered that Officer Stuart was wounded by friendly fire.

"We come from a loving family. We love. We forgive. We move on. If the situation hadn't taken place the way it did, the party spilling out into the streets, out into the community. Everybody was calling, NYPD had to respond," Stuart said.

Officer Stuart is expected to have a second surgery. Right now he's getting a great deal of support not only from a large family as he's one of nine children.

He's also feeling support from his 40th Precinct family that stops by to check on his recovery.

"I'd like to thank everybody for coming out and showing us love and all the support, we appreciate it," Stuart said.

Stuart says Sharrod is in good spirits, but can't wait to return to patrol duty.

"He's going to go right back when he is able to go back. Right with his group at the 40th Precinct, he's going to be there," Stuart said.
