GARDEN CITY, Long Island (WABC) -- There was a big surprise for a second-grader on Long Island who thought his Dad still had months left in his Army deployment.

Staff Sergeant Juan Grisales surprised his son, Alexander on Monday at his class at Stewart Manor School.

Alexander was talking to his classmates about his Dad's job, but he wasn't expecting him to walk through the door!

"It was a surprise to see his face, and especially, I was standing outside and to hear him talk about the whole military, 'yeah, my Dad's a veteran,' you know?" said Staff Sergeant Grisales.

"I want to spend time with him, and give him a big hug at home," Alexander said.

Staff Sergeant Grisales has been overseas for about a year, serving in Africa.
