FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw an interception one play after the Patriots intercepted a pass by the New York Giants' Daniel Jones.
This is the first time since 2001 that he has thrown an interception on the first play following a Patriots takeaway. He did it twice in 2001: Week 10 against the Rams and Week 17 at the Panthers.
The interception by Janoris Jenkins is the 21st of his career.
In a defensive battle, this is the first time since 2016 (Week 4) that the Patriots have failed to score on any their first four drives of the game. That was a 16-0 loss to the Bills with Jacoby Brissett starting at QB. The last time a Brady-led Patriots team failed to score on any of their first four drives was 2014 (Week 4), a 41-14 loss to the Chiefs.
Brady had Julian Edelman open down the middle of the field but seemed to misread the play. He threw behind his receiver.
Jenkins was playing in a zone and waiting at the left hash. The ball landed in his arms for his third interception of the season. Jenkins returned the ball 62 yards into Patriots territory, if not for a Markus Golden unnecessary roughness penalty at the end of the run.
The Giants' defense, which had struggled so badly this season, got off to a strong start against the Patriots. New England's only points in the first quarter came on a blocked punt for a touchdown.
