TRENTON, N.J. -- Former NFL star Plaxico Burress' attorney says he believes his client can work out a deal with prosecutors in his tax evasion case.

The Trentonian reports that attorney Thomas DiLullo said in court Monday that he expects a deal but wouldn't say whether it could keep the 38-year-old Burress out of jail.

The former wide receiver with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and New York Jets has pleaded not guilty to willful failure to pay state tax and issuing a bad check or electronic funds transfer.

Burress is the first person in New Jersey to be charged under a law that makes issuing a bad electronic funds transfer a criminal offense.

The newspaper reports that the Totowa resident was offered a deal requiring him to serve a year in jail and pay $54,000 in restitution.
