Teen charged in double stabbing at Rutgers University

NEW BRUNSWICK (WABC) -- Two men have been stabbed at Rutgers University, and another man is in custody.

Around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Rutgers University Police Department responded to Mettler Residence Hall lobby on the College Avenue. A suspect had stabbed two victims following a confrontation.

One Rutgers student and a non-affiliated victim were both taken to the hospital for treatment. They are stable.

According to university police, Rutgers student Daniel J. Leandry, 18, of Garfield, N.J., was charged in the stabbing with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and possession of a weapon. He will be remanded to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional facility in lieu of $735,000.00 bail.

Leandry was found by police in his Mettler Hall room, according to police.

Eyewitnesses said that the two men had been talking to each other when they suddenly started to argue and things escalated from there.

"I saw them sitting on a couch and they seemed pretty casual. Then, all of a sudden they got up and started yelling at each other, and it was like a big fighting match and they were, it started to get physical and then yeah, it was like a knife fight," said Mikaela Dixon, a witness.
