Out-of-control car smashes into couple working on car in Stamford driveway
Josh Einiger reports their grandson was riding his tricycle nearby.

STAMFORD, Conn. (WABC) -- There's new video of an out-of-control car in Connecticut, the car plowing into a driveway and slamming into two parked cars.

Under those cars in Stamford was a couple doing mechanical work.

It was a perfect day for a labor of love. Newly obtained surveillance video shows Maria and Brain Palmer were working on their 74 Nova while their grandson was riding around on his tricycle. But in mere moments, everything changed as an out of control car careened into them.

"If anything would have happened to him, any of my grandkids, I mean," Maria said.

Now hobbled with injuries, the Palmers are still struggling to understand what happened that Sunday last month, when the car barreled into their lives.

From one angle you can see it back at high speed up their Stamford street, clipping one of their cars before plowing into their driveway. It broadsided the 3,500 pound Nova, which moved seven feet, nearly winding up on top of Brian.

"I see a lot of people working under cars out in the street. And I'm like, I'd never work out in the street more chance of getting hit. You would figure you'd be safe in your own driveway," Brian said.

They hadn't even gotten their bearings when the car took off. A family member ran after it.

Police quickly tracked down the driver, who admitted he had no license.

But the Palmers' problems were just beginning. They're now fighting with the car owner's insurance company which claims it will cover just $10,000 in property damage.

They say that prized Nova, now heavily damaged, is worth at least $40,000.

"I get so frustrated because we do everything right and we have enough to cover anything that would happen that we would cause, but other people just don't have it and they get a slap on the hand and OK, done," Maria said.

Thanks to the family's security camera footage, police were able to track down the car and when they did they say the driver, Gerson Vazquez-Martinez, told them he fled out of panic because he didn't have a license.

He's now charged with leaving the scene and driving without a license. He's been let out though on $5,000 bail.
