STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- A 15-year-old girl was shot in the face by a bullet fired outside the city-run West Brighton Houses apartment complex on Staten Island late Sunday.
The girl was struck in the left cheek while walking with a male friend in the courtyard in front of 806 Henderson Avenue around 10:30 p.m.
She suffered a fractured jaw as the bullet went through her left cheek and exited through the back side of her neck.
She was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in stable condition.
The victim had just left the apartment building, where she was visiting with a friend, when she exited she encountered an older teenager.
Police say he pulled out a gun and fired at her and her friend, but only the girl was struck.
She ran back into the building, where she realized she had been shot.
The suspect, a man about 6-foot-1, was wearing a black hoodie and red shorts. He fled on foot.
A 17-year-old was fatally shot at the same building in February. One arrest was made in that case.
