Surfer rescues girl caught in Lake Michigan rip current

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. -- A surfer saved a 14-year-old girl caught in a rip current in Lake Michigan.

Two girls, ages 13 and 14, were swimming near Grand Haven, Mich., when they felt themselves being pulled away from the shore. They struggled to stay above water.

Zebulon Boeskool jumped into the lake to try and rescue them. He managed to reach the older girl, who was about 800 feet away from the beach. Another man helped the younger girl to shore.

They were both taken to the hospital. One girl's condition has stabilized. The other is already at home.

Boeskool, who has two daughters himself, said he is happy both teens are OK.

Public safety officials urge swimmers to keep the danger of rip currents in mind. Although rip currents are usually associated with the ocean, they can cause hazardous swimming conditions on lakes as well.
