QUEENS (WABC) -- There is no long-term money in the new New York City budget to continue ferry service that began in the Rockaways and Brooklyn after Superstorm Sandy.

The Seastreak service from the Rockaways to Lower Manhattan began in November of 2012, when the peninsula had no subway service.

The ferry is popular and was subsidized by the city, running weekdays from Beach 108th Street to the Brooklyn Army Terminal at 58th Street and Pier 11.

The ferry service, which cost $3.50, has allowed for hundreds of thousands of passenger trips since its initial launch.

The $75 billion budget contains $2 million for the extension of service through October.

Officials from the New York City Economic Development Corporation were looking for a five-year commitment and will now have to look at proposals from ferry operators to run the service.
