Police: Resident holds down Uniondale home invasion suspect

UNIONDALE, Long Island (WABC) -- Two men were arrested on Long Island after a home invasion Wednesday in which a resident was able to restrain one of the suspects until police arrived.

Nassau County police say that officers responded to a Walton Avenue home in Uniondale around 10 a.m., when they found a man being held by one of the residents, who is also an NYPD officer.

Danny Godinez was at school when the entire thing happened, but he tells Eyewitness News that a woman inside the house called his father and brother, telling them someone was using a crowbar to break into the house through the back door.

"You don't expect to go to school and expect two people to break into your house," he said. "My dad was like 10 minutes away with my brother, so they came and they caught the guys in the act. And then they started fighting."

Vitelio Cornejo, 34, of Roosevelt, was arrested at the home. The second suspect, 32-year-old Marvin Segovia-Garcia, of Hempstead, fled toward Hempstead Turnpike and was arrested in a nearby wooded area.

Godinez said he's just happy that when he returned home from school, he heard a triumphant story and not a sad one.

"I'm proud of my dad, I'm proud of my brother," he said. "I'm glad no one got hurt."

Both men are charged with burglary and criminal mischief, and additionally, Segovia-Garcia is charged with assault and menacing.
