Heavy rain leads to flooding in parts of the Tri-State area

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Heavy morning rain led to some street flooding as the system pushed through the New York City region.

Douwnpours sparked flash flooding in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Up to 2 feet of water flooded Ninth Street, but some drivers attempted to drive through it. That's something officials advise drivers should never do.

Buses were detoured in both directions after the Ninth Street Bridge flooded.

Detour is as follows:

-- Smith St and Fulton St Bound: Via 9 St, left on 2 Av, right on 15 St into Hamilton Av, right on Smith St, left on W 9 St and regular route.

-- 19 St and Prospect Park West Bound: Via Smith St, right on 3 St, right on 3 Av, left on 9 St and regular route.

The following bus stops will be utilized on detour route:

-- Northbound: 2 Av, farside 9 St between 9 St and 10 St. West 9 St, farside Smith St between Smith St and Court St.

On Long Island, the Nassau County Department of Health issued an advisory against bathing at 19 beaches on Friday becayse of the heavy rainfall. Stormwater runoff can impact bathing water quality by elevating bacteria levels, which may be higher than the New York State standard for bathing water quality.

By late morning, the rain moved out of the area and sunshine was expected to return in the afternoon.
