WEST NYACK, New York (WABC) -- Police say an employee of a used car dealership in Rockland County died after being shot by a customer during a dispute Saturday afternoon.
The shooting occurred about 3:15 p.m. at Youbs Auto Sales in West Nyack.
The victim has been identified as 37-year-old Youbens Joseph, of Middletown.
He had been shot three times, police said, with one of the bullets piercing the dealership's metal door.
Authorities don't yet know whether the gunman and the victim knew each other, but it was being investigated as a possible dispute with a customer.
Police say the gunman has a beard and was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat and glasses.
Investigators returned to the scene Monday to check security camera footage for any signs of the suspect's getaway car.
"The detective bureau is currently working on different leads that we are trying to get from the public's help as well," Clarkstown police Detective Pete Walker said. "Right now, we can say the public is not in any kind of danger."
A memorial now sits at the scene, and Dawn Cudak could barely hold back tears as she lit a candle for her good friend.
"My heart is broken," she said. "My heart is broken for the family. He was a good man, and I pray to God that someone out there will find this man."
The victim's next door neighbor said she can't imagine who would take the life of a gentle and caring man.
"He was out here during the snow storm with the kids, cleaning the sidewalk and the driveway," Ellen Llanos said. "Young guy with three young kids."
