Woman killed after being struck by MTA bus in Brooklyn

SHEEPSHEAD BAY, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A woman was killed after being struck by an MTA bus in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, on Monday night.

Eleonora Shulkina, 62, of Brooklyn, was crossing the intersection on Avenue Z and 17th Street just before 6 p.m. when a B36 bus hit her while it was making a left turn.

According to the New York City Police Department, officers found Shulkina unconscious with head trauma.

The MTA B36 bus had been traveling east on Avenue Z when it turned onto East 17th Street, striking the victim as she crossed 17th from east to west. The operator of the bus remained on scene.

She was taken to Coney Island Hospital and died a short time later. Investigators have questioned the driver, and no charges have been filed.

This is the fourth pedestrian struck by a bus in the area in six weeks.

The NYPD has launched its Holiday Pedestrian Safety Initiative. It runs this week, through Sunday, and targets speeding drivers or those who don't yield to pedestrians in areas near senior centers during congested hours.

The NYPD also points out that despite recent events, pedestrian fatalities decreased by more than 4 percent during the last year.
