N.Y. traffic, transit alert to inform commuters

NEW YORK TransAlert will send e-mail messages about traffic jams, train delays, weather problems or other conditions that could disrupt travel.

The alerts will be the first part of New York's 511 system, a transportation hot line the state will inaugurate in late fall, said Todd Westhuis, 511 project director and an official at the New York State Department of Transportation.

The TransAlert system will be running by mid- to late-April.

Westhuis says commuters can sign up for TransAlert on www.nyalert.gov , run by the New York State Emergency Management Office.
